Broken teeth, the Boyfriend Rally, and the Missing Dustpan

IMG_2359

Sometimes I wondered if my life would become less interesting as my children get older and “more mature.”

BAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Nope. When people say that there is never a dull moment in raising four boys, that is a very literal, literal statement.

Case in point: MLKJ Day weekend:

We had zero plans, other than Joshua’s opening basketball game, which they lost.  Not a big deal to us. We are experts at losing. I don’t know what that says about us…..but it was our head coach’s very first loss as a coach!??!  Heh???  Bizarre, considering he’s been coaching youth basketball for years and years. I’m pretty sure he was disappointed. In all fairness, our 3rd/4th graders were up against a team of humongous 5th graders that dwarfed our kids, and yes, I am petty enough to point that out. 😉 hehehe

The rest of the weekend made my basketball attendance fail, mentioned in my last post, I Did Try, sound like a walk in the park.

Sunday afternoon, I went to choir practice. Midway through practice, my cell phone rang. I was so embarrassed because we had just finished joking about that happening in the service this morning. I grabbed my phone and silenced it, but I noticed it was Alan. Might be important. Better go find out. I walked outside and called him back.

“You need to come home right away.”

“Okay. What happened??”

“Caleb fell and broke his front tooth in half.”

(diagonally!!!)

“Oh nooo. I’m on my way.”

That still didn’t prepare me for the sight of my little Ca-bob. His mouth was swollen, actually it still is swollen, to proportions I’ve never seen before. They had gone on a family walk/scooter ride to the mini-mart in our neighborhood, and Caleb took a spill, landing square on his mouth. We never did find the other half of Caleb’s big, beautiful permanent front tooth. 🙁

Poor thing. He’s so sweet and so tough. He’s handling it all really well. I still haven’t actually seen what his front tooth looks like. His lip is so swollen that I can’t even get a glimpse of it.

Alan found a local family dentist that agreed to come in and look at Caleb’s mouth last night. The dentist said that Caleb’s mouth is too swollen to work on until next week. I personally thought surely it would look a little better by today, but it doesn’t. The dentist also said that several other teeth are gashed as well. A lot of work will have to be done.

Lots of dental work…hmmm…All of your birthday presents just got smaller…. hehehe just kidding…

I can’t show you a picture. I feel too bad for the little fella to share that with the world. Just keep him in your prayers. He can barely eat or drink anything. His mouth is cut to pieces.

So on a lighter note……a few more stories, all from this weekend:

1. We put JD in a big boy bed. Last night, at 1am, he suddenly figured out how to open his bedroom door, and headed downstairs to the kitchen. Yeah….

happy toddler

2. At 11am this morning, one of the neighborhood boys knocked on our front door.  He handed Joshua a flyer he had made on the computer that said this:

“Help *Amazing Smith* find a new boyfriend. Come to the rally at the park at 12:00, or die.”

The “or die” part was scratched out with marker.

By the way*I changed the names…

*Johnny explained, “Here’s this flyer. This may be a little inappropriate. Amazing’s boyfriend (she’s like 7) broke up with her yesterday, so we’re all gathering at the park today, you know, to show our support.”

Now I call her Amazing because she is this adorable little blonde girl who has played at our house a few times. She earned the nickname (in my head) because when I’m giving, “Stop opening and closing the garage door,” and “The last person through always needs to shut the door,” lectures, she is always our only guest that actually RESPONDS.

“Okay. Yes ma’am. Did you know that we have a baby too?”

It’s so refreshing. Boys don’t do a ton of talking. Do you give people nicknames in your head, or is that just me?

Anyway, the whole rally thing was so ludicrous it was hilarious. As soon as *Johnny left, Joshua just laughed and laughed. He made sure he was there promptly at 12, though. 😉

Caleb and Dan, at the Golden Gate bridge, on New year's day. I know that looks dangerous, but I can assure you that the wall only had grass on the other side. It was not a huge dropoff as it appears in the photo.

It was not a huge dropoff as it appears in the photo. I promise he was only up there for a second.  Also, blame Alan not me. I was in the car with JD. 😉

3. The dustpan

I swept the kitchen, but when I finished, I noticed the dustpan was not in its place. Wha??? Where’s the dustpan?  I looked everywhere. Then I began to question the children.

I started with Daniel. He didn’t know. I moved on to Caleb. Nope. I went outside to where Joshua lives, the trampoline, and asked him.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I was using it when I was being a vampire. It’s in my room.”

I didn’t ask for further details. I was just so thankful to find my dust pan.

  • Poor kiddo for breaking his tooth! If I lived locally I would have helped him:) Life is def never boring with boys!!!

  • Poor Caleb. Ha ha on the rally and the dust pan. Your life will NEVER be boring. 🙂

  • Eeeek, I can’t believe that about the tooth! It sounds like the whole weekend wasn’t a bust, though!

Thanks for linking up at Thank Goodness It’s Thursday!

    – I’m sooo curious about the dustpan/vampire thing… 🙂

  • That is funny and sweet they wanted to show “Amazing” support. So sorry about Caleb’s tooth…ouchie! Sounds like your house never has a dull moment either!

  • So I guess your son and I are two of the rare people in the world who know the secret to making a vampire collar (I didn’t actually use a dust-pan, I drafted a fancy Oriental fan of my sister’s, and considering what happened when she discovered that crumpled fan, I wish I HAD thought of the dust-pan 🙁 Lol. Sorry to hear about Caleb’s mouth, but hopefully, by the next time I visit, most of it will be as good as new. He’s in my prayers.

  • Poor kid I hope he feels better! My kids both knock there teeth thru there lips when they were younger it is no fun!

  • Goodness I’ll need to do a lot of reading to catch op on every thing I’ve missed this last month and a half. You seem to be keeping as busy as ever 🙂 Tris had a similar fall when he was about 3, luckily he did not have his permanent teeth at the time but he did damage the tooth underneath now he has a extra white streak in his front tooth. I also give every one nicknames, problem is I’m horrible with names so the nickname tends to stick 😉 The Dustpan… hehehe I can only imagine the reasoning behind that one!

    • Glad we are not the only ones with teeth stories, but more glad that Tris’s weren’t permanent teeth. Phew! hehe Yes, nicknames do stick. Turns out that the dustpan was to make the “vampire cape” stand up around his neck. Makes sense!

  • Poor Caleb! I hope that he is doing better now. And poor you! I’m sure you hurt as much as he does. Our son had his front teeth kicked out (as a teenager) and we rushed him to the dentist, desperately praying. God answered: His teeth survived the injuries and look terrific. Thank you, Lord!

  • My youngest has a mouth that is attracted to the ground! I’m surprised he still has front teeth with as many hits as he’s taken to his mouth. He doesn’t have any permanent teeth yet, so I hope this trend ends before they arrive. I hope your little one’s mouth is better soon!

  • Oh, I feel so sorry for your little guy, but this post (besides that part) made me laugh! Life with boys really never has a dull moment. 🙂 The title alone drew me in. Ah, the adventures of childhood…and motherhood.

Oh no a broken tooth! I am so sorry. Life really never gets dull with kids. My mom says it only gets crazier as they grow up and go to college. Then when the grand kids come that is a whole new adventure.

  • Poor Caleb!! Dental work is never fun! I hope everything ends up healing well and that the fixing part isn’t as to terribly hard.
I love the things that boys take when they are playing. A dustpan for Vampire Adventures, I would have loved to take part in that. 🙂

  • Oh my gosh… I hope his mouth feels okay! Poor guy!

I do hope you get to the bottom of how a dustpan is used with playing “Vampire” for ~investigating journalism~. And also because if it actually involves cleaning, I’m going to need to encourage this game in my household.

    • I love the investigative journalism reference. ha! I decided to investigate this morning. He said he used the dustpan to make the collar of his cape stand up, like a vampire. 🙂 Makes sense!

  • Maybe Joshua is a self-cleaning vampire. Think about it. What happens to a vampire if they are caught in the sunlight? Don’t they turn to ashes and dust? Someone would need a dust pan for that……. lol Just a theory…….

  • Thinking about Caleb 🙂 That has always been one of my worst fears with myself and my kids. The note still cracks me up! I am just picturing all of these kids gathered around this girl in support of her break-up 😉

  • This is quite the weekend April. I am so sorry for Caleb, and sincerely hope and pray he heals well without much complications!

Come on friends! Let’s all remember to vote for April on the pink and brown Top Mommy Bloggers square each time we read her blog! We have let her drop down to 75!

Feel so bad for Caleb… What did the dentist mean by “other teeth are gashed too”? Hope he is in less pain today. Who found JD downstairs at 1:00! What was he in to? I guess the stair gate will be up tonight

  • The front tooth thing happened to one of my kids too by jumping up and getting a drink out of the faucet (the adult front tooth). It has been a total work in progress..hope you little one doesn’t have to go through as much as mine has!

  • Gahhahaha! Yet… I am intrigued as to how the dustpan was involved in vampirism? Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see the connection…. Also, a boyfriend at 7? Seriously? Somebody needs to talk to Amazing’s not-so-amazing parents… But then, maybe that’s just my Victorian morality rearing its mouldy, moth-ball-scented, blue-haired head… xx MH

    • haha! Mother Hen, I thought it was ridiculous too, but then I can recall myself at 7 also having ‘boyfriends’..Some of them may not have been aware that they were my ‘boyfriends’ though. haaa

I love comments! Otherwise, it's really just me talkin' to myself...
