It's funny how our disadvantages can become our blessings.

The doctor said not to walk and to rest my feet this week, and I really like it.

Is that funny that I like it? Am I not supposed to? Does that make me sound lazy? I’m not lazy. I’m quite industrious here on my sofa. Yes, I do admit to spending way too much time reading Facebook yesterday. Way too much time, but that aside, I’ve been productive. According to my Fitbit, I still managed to get 4,000 steps yesterday. Maybe this is what it’s like to have a desk job instead of being a homemaker.

I have blogger friends who do this everyday. They work on their writing, promotions, and blog work all day long, and they are far more successful than I am with their websites due to their consistency. Maybe I should do this more often. I love it.

What do I do all day?

For this entire week, I am sitting on my sofa doing things on my computer.

First, I get the boys off to school. The middle schoolers don’t need anything from me, but I chat with them while I drink my coffee. Then we wake up the younger two. I fix their breakfast, boss them around, and then I walk them to the bus stop. No one ever told me when I was just a 6-year-old bossy know-it-all-little-girl that I could use that for my motherhood gig. Ha!! I’m kidding. I direct the children. Does that sound nicer?

Then I come home and eat breakfast while I check the messages and see if there’s anything new and interesting on social media. I’ll call my mom or text my husband. I look over my checking account and pay the bills.

Once my feet get too cold to sit any longer, or my sciatica kicks in from the sitting, I get up and do a few chores while I listen to a podcast. My current favorite is the Thankful Homemaker. She’s a little older than me, and her stuff is so wise and Biblical.

Then back to my sofa I go to create pins for Pinterest, read other people’s blogs, and work on writing new content and fixing up old posts as well. Today I learned that broken links are bad for search engine optimization. Yipe. This website goes back to 2014. I have about a billion broken links, especially since Top Mommy Blogs shut down, which I was a very active member of.

At 3, the boys come home. I do more chatting, and we work on studying and homework. Caleb has been walking down to the bus stop and picking up the younger two for me while I’m down. Around 5 or 5:30, I whip together a dinner. Alan comes home around 6 or 6:30, and we usually all eat together. Then we wind down and spend two hours getting our kids to bed. I know that’s crazy long, but I like to read with them.

We’ve had very easy meals this week.

Do you know what this week taught me?

God provides exactly what we need. This has forced me to sit down and work on something that I actually love to do. It’s a gift. Too often I don’t work on it because I feel guilty to be blogging when there are bathrooms I could be scrubbing, and even … well… I hate to admit this. I judge people for doing this very thing…. There are still blanket Christmas lights on three bushes outside in my front yard, and here it is already January 15th!! Alan took down all the lights that were up high, but he left the ones on the bushes for me to do, and I haven’t done them. At least I did unplug them around January the 5th.

So see, there’s always something, with a house full of people, that needs to be done, but this has forced me off of my feet and onto my laptop. I couldn’t walk around all day if I wanted to. It hurts too much.

It’s funny how our disadvantages can become our blessings.

That’s how it is with my sore feet. Here is this unexpected free pass to stay home and write and edit to my heart’s content, and so for that I am thankful. Yep. I am thankful for bad feet!

What are you thankful for today?

  • I have so many broken links, too, especially since Top Mommy Blogs shut down – I used to be active there as well. I also used to put blogging (mostly) first but then I lost my way a little when I wanted to stop talking about my son as much (when he was three, he wasn’t talking and we thought it might be autism, but no diagnosis…anyway, back then I needed it. Now, he’s (mostly) fine and 10 years old so it feels unfair to talk about some of his challenges. So glad you linked up and I hope you feel better soon. Sounds like you’re making a great use of your time on the sofa!

    • That was exactly my struggle, wanting to write about life but unable to talk openly about my children. Oh, actually that is still my struggle. We are compromising. They are accepting that their mother is a writer. She is who she is, and I am respecting their wishes to not have their problems broadcast. It’s tough because as moms our kids are so important to us we think about them all the time!

  • I can relate to sciatica as I have had it ever since I was pregnant with my second daughter almost 10 years ago. I go to the chirpractor to help keep the flareups to a minimal and also help me be on the mend quicker when I do have it flare. That said, I am also one of those bloggers you talk about that works from home. But I do try daily to get out even just to run a few errands to keep me moving as I can’t sit too long either. But glad you are finding your way back to your blog and hope you feel better soon now.

    • Thanks! I’ve truly enjoyed this time to work on blogging. It’s been like an ah-ha moment. Ohhhh this is what I need to do more of. Sciatica yes mine started with a pregnancy too.

  • Headaches, toothaches and foot aches are the top three pains I can’t deal with. So I commended you for multi-tasking. I used to put blogging “almost” first once upon a time ago but when you do it does become an off and on all day thing to keep it up. I miss those days but as long as I get it in where I can fit it in, that will have to do. Enjoy your quiet time until 3:00 🙂

  • Well. I do hope your feet feel better. Also, you can totally link this up to Finish the Sentence Friday on my post today – because it’s totally a Currently post!
I am one of those bloggers you talked about – who do this all day. This time of year is easier, so I have more time for light housework (light.. I can’t do that stuff well), some pet tending, and exercise for myself. Sometimes I meet friends for coffee which is awesome.
I will find that even if it’s a totally dead day and I only have 1-2 tasks, I can spread them out over a whole day. It’s amazing how fast 3:30 gets here. I don’t even take enough time to read a book or watch a show.
I really love this glimpse into your days!

    • And you do it so well and crank out the good stuff. Your blog has been one of my favorites for years. Literally years. Thanks for the heads up on Finish the Sentence Friday. Will do! I love this. I am fully planning to do more of this.

I love this insight into your life! Moms work so hard but it’s definitely worth it.

I can image it’s hard to stay put as a mom of four but I think it’s great you has the time to blog and do something you love. Very good point, disadvantages can become advantages. It’s all perception!

  • How awesome to see how you are finding joy (and efficiency) in your trials. I have been thanking God for some trials and am amazed at the peace it brings. Hope your feet are on the mend!

I love comments! Otherwise, it's really just me talkin' to myself...
