When I was a child, I loved Valentine’s Day. No, not really just Valentine’s Day. I loved ALL the holidays. I never liked those questions where people ask you which is your favorite. As a kid people often ask you your favorite things.

“What’s your favorite color?”

“Favorite holiday?”

“Favorite food?”

I have the same problem with all three of these questions, which no one asks you when you’re an adult, until you have children. Then your children ask you these questions. Of course, they add on things like:

“What’s your favorite animal?”

“Favorite dinosaur? Second favorite? Third favorite?”

I must be the most boring person ever, because I never did know how to answer these questions. My favorite book is Anne of Green Gables, and my favorite boy is Alan, so I married him. All the colors are beautiful, food is delicious, all the food, and holidays? I sort of live for holidays these days.

I think things like, “What holiday is next that I need a wreath for?”

“Who is the next person I have to buy a present? Who’s birthday is next?”

“Wait. Are we close to Christmas? What season is it even?”

So do I like Valentine’s Day? Yes, I’ve written about this before. I do not even care if the holiday was created by greeting card companies. The people who complain about this holiday are usually just men who are too cheap to buy flowers and chocolates. It is a day to exchange chocolate, go out to eat, and tell people you love them. What’s not to love?

Well, yes, there’s the whole single person thing, but when I was single I do not remember Valentine’s Day bothering me. I mean my mom still bought me those little boxes of conversations hearts, so really I was happy.

In school, we always decorated our little white bag with construction paper hearts, exchanged store-bought paper Valentines, and ate cupcakes and drank fruit punch. Wahooo! Happy Valentine’s Day to us!!!

We don’t do anything elaborate for this holiday. We exchange pleasantries in the form of Russell Stover’s, and we order take out food because we hate crowds. Some years I cook something everyone likes and make strawberry cake. It’s all very simple and exciting.

I do have a couple of ideas for what I want to do this year. This has been quite a challenging school year, and we need pick-me-ups in the form of holidays on the regular. I made a video earlier today to talk about Valentine’s Day as well as the books I have been reading lately. Of course, it froze on a less-than flattering photo, so mash play, and you won’t have to keep seeing my face looking all rough.

The Date Night Coupon Printable

http://www.mycraftilyeverafter.com/2015/02/04/printable-valentines-date-night-coupons/

I mentioned these in the video, but I got cut off. You see, I have this timer that lets me know I have spent too much time on Facebook, and it always kicks on at the most inopportune of times, like in the middle of filming. Click here to print these date night coupons for yourself. I noticed you have to scroll down to the very bottom of the blog post to print the coupons, and you can choose pre-printed ones or ones that say “Date Night” but then you fill in whatever you want the date to be.

I actually got that whole date night idea from the TheMessyBunMommie.com, if you would like to check out her blog.

Basically, my plan is to make this upcoming Valentine’s weekend the best I can make it. Moving has been such a hard transition. I can’t even explain to you how hard uprooting one’s world over and over again is, and we need all the holidays we can get. This year’s will actually be extra special because Daniel and John David are getting baptized this week.

Whatever year I’m in, that year is my favorite, so I’m calling this year my best one, and I am determined it will be. Much love to all of you! Go paint things pink and eat chocolate.

“But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.”
Jesus in Luke 6:35

I’m linking up with Finish the Sentence Friday. “Favorite or Worst Valentine’s Days”

November is quite possibly my favorite month of the year. Why? It all boils down to 2 primary reasons. #1. It is not SUPPOSED to be 90 degrees anymore. I’d do anything to get these temps turned down. ARE humans causing global warming? I don’t know. I don’t care anymore. If there’s a chance it might work, here, take my car keys……. Wait……. Does that mean I have to home school again? No, never mind. You can have my electricity, [...]

You can have my electricity, but I am going to have to insist on driving my kids to school. The gas guzzling minivan actually does take precedence over global warming after all. Sorry, y’all.

But seriously, bring on the blue jeans weather!!! And leggings! And boots!

#2. Low maintenance holiday.

Yes, it is. Eat with friends or family. Share the cooking responsibilities. No one has to buy presents. We don’t have to take out any loans. Just be thankful.

And you know who invented Thanksgiving?? Why, President Abraham Lincoln, of course!!

Not making that up. I read about Lincoln all the time. I never thought about presidents of years past until we moved to Washington, D.C. Plus, Caleb adored Lincoln, and it rubbed off on me, sort of like Joshua’s fascination with animals. I love the way my children have changed me!

“…I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed….” –President Lincoln, Oct. 3, 1863

You have to love a man who was called “Honest Abe” even while he was still alive.

He was greatly loved and equally hated in his own time.

In fact, in our current political system, he would have never been the Republican nominee. How do I know? Because he was elected at the convention, not from the sort of primary system we have now. Nope. The delegates at the Republican convention put in a first ballot, and the person with the most votes was Seward. William Henry Seward. He became President Lincoln’s right hand man, but at the convention it was Seward who won the first round of ballots.

The delegates then haggled and regrouped and voted again and again, allowing the delegates to switch their support. Lincoln won on the third ballot.

Funny how differently it was run back then, isn’t it? I dare say we would have a different nominee if that old system were still in place, actually.

I’m thankful it was Lincoln that won on that third ballot.

I heard in a video on the internet the other day a cartoon character remark that Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday. Ugh. Wrong.

Of course, it IS. It was ALWAYS meant to be. You want a non-religious holiday?? You have Halloween, which is not a bad holiday. It is a time when we come together and fellowship with our neighbors, something we could also use a little more of.

People often cite how terribly divided our country is right now, but remember, it is not “the most divided it has ever been.” We aren’t having a Civil War, now are we?

Be thankful! Give thanks to our beneficent Father!!!

I could go on and on about Lincoln, because he was wonderful, but I’ll save that for another post. Today I just want to wish you a happy fall, remind you to enter my giveaway (because I love to give good things to my friends and readers), and encourage you to pray for our country, just as President Lincoln asked us to so many years ago.

Will you vote this year? I know. These choices are so unpopular. So unpopular I’d be embarrassed to endorse either of them. But it is our civic duty to vote and even more so to pray.

God bless! And bring out the turkeys!!! 🙂

I am excited about the holidays! So excited! Mostly because it means I don’t have to teach as much. Is that wrong?

I was at the chiropractor’s office today, when lo and behold, Daniel’s new preschool teacher walked in. I admitted to her that her job was much too hard on the back for me. Just the one day of volunteering had me running home to my hot pack. But you know what? She loves teaching. It’s her calling!

I’m so glad that there are people who actually do love teaching. I am in awe of teachers.

The boys were so excited about this, so goofing up was sad. They were soft and delicious, but the icing was runny. That wouldn’t have mattered, if the icing bag had not BUSTED wide open all over the cookies. Icing everywhere. At that point, we just gave up and ate the cookies.

As for the Crispy M & M on the crotch, that was Daniel, and I assure you it was just a button. I’m pretty sure.

Truth is, I just found that Pinterest photo and stuck it beside mine. I never had any intentions of doing something I’m completely incapable of: making cookies that cute.

The holiday bug took over me yesterday. I cooked 2 pans of cornbread, 1 pan of dressing (southern style), and gingerbread cookies! I even made my own chicken broth, mostly because I didn’t think I had any. Daniel later pointed out that I had an entire unopened carton of chicken broth in the refrigerator. Where were you two hours earlier, Daniel?

Instead, I forgot to take pictures past the first 10 or so minutes. I’m sorry. Multi-tasking is also not me… I didn’t even take a finished product photo…..and that, my friends, is why I will never be a famous blogger. Pioneer Woman I am not.

******

My boys are eaten up with poison oak. Monday we finally made it to Classical Conversations. I knew Joshua’s face was starting to break out, but after missing two weeks in a row, plus several other weeks this year, due to one or the other of us being sick or having an appointment, I refused to be stopped.

We had one, shining, glorious day of CC. Then Monday night, Caleb’s entire body exploded in poison oak rash. Joshua’s face itches so bad that he sleeps on ice packs, and Daniel woke up at 1am barking and struggling for air.

It’s the week before Thanksgiving. At our house that means that Alan’s entire family is doing their Christmas shopping.
I asked Daniel today, “What do you want for Christmas, sweetie?”

“Um…handcuffs..”

“Handcuffs?”

“Yup. And a balloon!”

“Oh, good,” I mused to myself, “I can do all of this boy’s shopping at Dollar Tree and be done just like that…”

“And a car!”

Yes!

“with a remote”

“Oh, you want a remote control car? I’m sure we could do that. Okay.”

“No, a car that you can ride on, actually.”

Whomp whomp whomp. Oh.

He wants a Power Wheel. We were so close.

Amazon affiliate link

I’m having trouble talking Alan into going along with that one. But, Alan, it’s Christmas…

So I’m making a note of this moment, I’m writing it down. Let the record show that I, April, am going to order at least one Christmas present today. I’m doing it! Joshua’s bringing me my hot pad, for my angry old hip, and I’m going to lay here and shop from home.

This has been a big and exciting week for us:

#1. Daniel had his preschool observation day. We got to go and sit in on a class, and if all went well, they told us he could start in January.

Well, someone get this boy a cookie. He was so mellow and sweet and well behaved. They told me he could start right away. She said, “He has done so well here. He’s so good and so mellow. It’s like he’s been here all year. He can start right away, if you’d like.”

Whoot! Go, Dan, go!

#2. I passed glucose tests 2 and 3. One was a three month sugar level test. Passed that. One was a fasting level test. Passed it too. No diabetes. Roll Tide!!

#3. I have my rheumatology appointment scheduled, but it may not even be a rheumatology related issue, so the doctor finally also ordered a new MRI.

#4. Alan’s list of possible jobs is in for us to choose from, and it looked good to me. We will probably be going right back to where we moved here from.

#5. This week is Thanksgiving! We have so much to be thankful for!

The healthy eating thing went so well last week, but I’ve made several big goofs this weekend, mostly involving Oreo cookies. I’m still trying to improve my diet, though, for the benefit of the whole family.

Would you believe that I did not get fog brain a single time this week? Amazing. It didn’t help the joint pain, though. That just keeps getting worse and worse. That’s why I’m looking forward to talking to more doctors about it. If we can figure out what is causing it, then I feel like I could more accurately do something about it.

I’m off to start this shopping! Happy Thanksgiving!!

My friend Mary is stepping in today to weigh in on this hot trend: the Elf on the Shelf. We don’t have one at our house–mostly because we don’t want the extra work. Is that a good enough reason? 😉 No ill will meant towards the Elf per say, as Mary said, “For those of you who do the whole elf thing, you keep making elf magic. ” Some of us will happily sit this one out. Let’s hear from [...]

Some of us will happily sit this one out.

Let’s hear from my friend and fellow military spouse, Mary Moore. She and I served our time together in the Family Support Group leadership trenches back when Joshua and Caleb were babies. Thanks for sharing with us today, Mary!!

Also funny: The Elf on the Shelf creators read this article and complained, so the original website for this article removed it to make them happy.

*************

“It’s true. I loathe Elf on the Shelf, but before you give me the speech about how my kids are being disserviced by not participating in this “tradition”, hear me out. Here are the top 5 reasons why I loathe Elf on the Shelf:

(5) I loathe you because right off I’m going to have to buy 3 of you. A boy elf for my son and then 2 girl elves for my daughters because if I only buy one girl elf there will be tears over each not having her own. At $30 a pop, I’m now well on my way to being broke this holiday season.

“Sorry sweet little beings of mine, Mommy can’t buy you that really awesome $50 toy you wanted because she just bought herself extra work (times 3) every Christmas season for the next ten years.”

(4) I loathe you because now that I’ve brought you home, I’m going to have to name you. No, Bob or Sue won’t work for you. I’ll have to come up with some elaborate Christmas-y name that sounds like you were named by Santa himself. I had enough trouble naming my three kids and now you want one too? Everyone is naming you cute little names like Clara or Snowbell but to be honest I just want to give you a four letter name that would surely distract from the Christmas season.

“Mommy, why can’t we tell the neighbor our Elf’s name?”

“Because, honey, Mommy will go to jail if you do.”

(3) I loathe you because not only do I have to bake cookies, buy presents, wrap presents, send out Christmas cards, attend school concerts, decorate the house, and make our travel plans (etc, etc, etc) but now I have to throw you into the mix too? I’d rather use hot sauce as contact lens solution!

“Little Timmy said his Elf made elaborate, over the top cookies last night while he was asleep. Couldn’t our Elf do that, Mom?”

“Just dump the Tabasco right here on my cornea.”

(2) I loathe you because Elf on the Shelf has now become Elf on the toilet, Elf hanging upside down on the Christmas tree, Elf baking cookies and leaving the flour and sprinkles on every surface in the kitchen, and just plain overachieving Elf! You’ve left your shelf and I just don’t see how you have time for all this mischief when you’re flying to the North Pole every night. Plus, I’m not creative enough to think of any place other than a shelf to put you.

“Mommy, why does our Elf never move?”

“Seriously? His right hand moved a quarter of an inch when I was pretending to dust the shelf. What more do you want from me?”

(1) The top reason why I loathe you is because even if I could remember to move you and come up with big, elaborate messes for the kids to find in the morning, I will still have to compete with the mom who has achieved all “150 cute and easy Elf on the shelf ideas” in the first 10 days of the season. The kicker is not only do I have to come up with creative ideas for the kids, now I have to entertain my husband because there’s a whole “racy and after hours” version of you going around. How am I supposed to convince my husband/kids to be good, if you are running amuck and not getting punished?

“Hey baby, I saw the Elf and Barbie were…”

“NO, just no.”

If you feel the same as I do, I’ve come up with a companion to Elf on the Shelf. Her name is Maid on Parade and she’s perfect for people who think the Elf should stay on the shelf. In theory, she makes sure that everything is cleaned up and your Elf makes it back to his shelf every night. In reality, you put them on a shelf and never have to move them again! Why has this not been done? It’s brilliant and it might just be enough to make me buy an Elf or 3. Who am I kidding? There is nothing that would make me want to experience Christmas time with an Elf that is on (or especially off) his shelf!

Do you participate in Elf on the Shelf? Do you feel like it’s time consuming and a waste of time? Or are you one of those overachieving Elf lovers? Please tell me I’m not the only one who feels this way!

P.S. I promise I’m not some crabby old lady who hates all things that make little kids happy. Sometimes I just need someone to throw Christmas cookies at me and tell me I’m pretty.”

October 31. It isn’t just Halloween–a very odd candy holiday in which perfectly happy, normal people throw skeleton decorations in their front yards. I don’t mean to be the Halloween Scrooge, but Halloween gets on my nerves. I passed a house yesterday with three fake tomb stones in the front yard. On the stones, the family had written the names of their children (living children). Weird, ya’ll. I don’t care what holiday that is. It’s weird.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s a day where my children eat too much sugar and ask me to spend a bunch of money on costumes. Then we attempt trick-or-treating, until some neighbor takes it all too seriously and comes running out with a hockey mask and a chain saw. One of my children always gets scared and wants to come home.

Or, the funny thing is, they are so excited to have six pieces of candy in their bag, they say, “Yes! Let’s go home and eat all this candy!!!”

I’m much more intrigued by a whole other event that took place on October 31, 1517. Yes, THAT Martin Luther: the one that started the whole Protestant Reformation. I mean, it had to be done. In those days, the Church was selling “forgiveness for sins” in exchange for money. What! Martin Luther was a highly dedicated Augustinian friar, with a doctorate in Bible, so he knew his Word backwards and forwards. He wrote down every single way in which the selling of indulgences was unBiblical and an exploitation of the poor. He sent this letter to his bishop. Some say he even nailed it to the door of the All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg.

Now you know I’m on board with someone who takes that kind of stand.

This is not to say anything against the Catholic Church nowadays, but in Martin Luther’s time, reform desperately needed to happen. As for the church now?

Psst….When it comes to Christianity, being a follower of Christ does not depend on what denomination of church you go to. All churches consist of lost and saved people alike, I am convinced.

What matters is the heart. That’s what God looks at. Is your heart right with God? How does one even get “right with God”?

Well, the Bible says that we can’t really, on our own. None of us are righteous, no not one. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

The Bible states that we are all in need of a Savior, and that savior is Jesus.

In 1517, the Church (not God’s Word), also taught that we needed a Savior, but not just that–we also needed enough good deeds, and we could just buy the good deed part by giving money to the church.

Wrong.

A clean heart cannot be bought.

I think John describes salvation best, in the verses that we always teach our children first:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

John 3:16

To be right with God, we need to come to a place where we see our sins for what they are–sins. We need to confess that, ask for forgiveness, believing that we can get that through Jesus. Why Jesus? Because he lived this life as a person, even though he is God, and he never sinned. However, he took OUR punishment for sin upon himself, simply because God loved us.

Jesus reconciled us to God.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2: 8-10

It’s a choice we all must make: to believe or not to believe, but if you choose not to believe, I hope you have well researched that decision. Life is so much better with Jesus in it.

Don’t you love a man who stands up for what he believes is right? Martin Luther didn’t turn his back on the church because of all the hypocrisy. Instead, he tried to change it. He educated, he persuaded, he was bold, and he was brave.

Eventually, change did happen, but at first all Martin Luther got for that was……excommunicated from the church. As it turns out, choosing to stand up for what’s right isn’t always popular.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

A few facts you may not know about Martin Luther

1. Martin Luther taught other reformers to not resort to violence in their quest for church reform since that is not Biblical. That reminds me of how Martin Luther King, Jr. also sought non-violent means to promote Civil Rights. There’s the connection.

2. Martin Luther wrote catechisms to teach the basics of Christianity to the people.

3. He also wrote a new Mass in German so that the common people could understand it, and he omitted everything that “smacks of sacrifice.” Luther preached that Mass was a gift, not a sacrifice.

4. Luther wrote gobs of hymns.

5. Luther translated the New Testament into German, but they say it was slanted towards his interpretations.

6. Luther always took the firm stance that communion was literal, not symbolic, as many reformers believed.

Happy Martin Luther Day! Have a great weekend.

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13

Remember last Easter, when I was about 7 months pregnant and I totally forgot to prepare for Easter? I joked that I had fallen very short of the “golden Baptist standard of Easter Sunday.” Well, boo-yah!!! Look who planned ahead this year!!!!!

Are those MATCHING outfits??? Why,yes, they are! We’ve come a long way, baby. (For a refresher on last Easter, just click here.)

(ahem…..that is a joke. Easter is not about clothing, of course….sometimes it may feel like it IS, but I can assure you that it isn’t. It’s about Jesus rising from the grave, conquering death, and making Heaven attainable for ALL of us.)

This was a refreshingly beautiful, happy Easter–the whole week was great! My parents visited, the sun is shining again, flowers are blooming, and JD is drinking from bottles AND sippy cups. Life is looking up.

We even quizzed the kids to make sure they knew that Easter is about Jesus’s resurrection, NOT about bunny rabbits. They passed with flying colors. It’s always good to get to feel like, “Hey, we’re doing okay!!” even for just a little while!

The only downside to Easter is having to get everyone dressed up, and that’s not really a down side. It’s just a lot of work. I spared myself the AGONY that used to come when I made the boys wear ties.

The tie, which offended Caleb to the point of tears, had already been removed for his picture.

Oh, the sweetness and cuteness–I love it!!! But you have no idea the crying and carrying on that we endured to get Caleb into that shirt and tie, which he shed as quickly as possible.

I am an older, battle worn, and more sensible woman these days. This year there were no tears. Now they wear this polo shirts.

ah, another Easter, another baby for us to cuddle….I will never grow tired of babies. If I had handled the whole delivery, sleepless nights, and stress thing better, I would keep having them. As it is, I’m just excited to tend to the ones I already have. I figure I can spend my whole life rocking babies in the church nursery.

Don’t you love rocking babies?? Daniel is three, and sometimes I still rock him to sleep–or at least to the point of drowsiness–just so that we can both enjoy it.

Even the Easter Bunny scored big this year. She–yes, our bunny is a female–decided to focus more on toys that fit in the basket and less on candy. It was a serious hit. The boys said it was their “best basket ever”. I steered clear of the dollar store toys this year and got toys that I knew they wanted.

I filled his eggs with Gerber Puffs. Also! I witnessed the BEST idea at church. I saw a mom put her baby’s bib on backwards for feeding time. *Mind blown* How have I had four babies and never thought to do this???? That way the food did not stain the cute bib!!! I’ve been copying this idea ever since. Front side of bib out for drool time. Backwards for feeding!! Love it!

Another great idea we didn’t figure out until #4: You don’t need a baby bath chair, once they graduate from the infant tub. You need a large, non stick mat for the tub, like you use for old people that are fall risks! JD never slips around, and we don’t have to struggle with a bath chair. Genius.

We had such a blessed weekend, and I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed having my parents here. Pictures from our DC adventure to come soon!

Sunday night we all slept like babies:
