–John David excitedly met me in the hall way shouting, “I pooped in the potty! I pooped in the potty!”

Cautiously, I ran to the toilet to check his story. Odd. He seemed so proud, and there was a smudge in the bowl, but no poop….

“JD, where’s the poop?”

“Right there!” So it was. There was a shiny wet log, wrapped in a baby wipe like a poop-hot dog, sitting there on the bathroom counter.

“Oh!! Ah!! Okay, JD, Mommy is so proud of you. Yeah!! Good job!!! It is so great that you pooped on the potty. You are a BIG boy now, but please, next time, let’s leave the poop in the potty.”

“Yes, JD, so great. Big boy! Definitely always leave it in the toilet.”

….Then the next day he pooped in his underwear again. I wasn’t impressed. JD asked, “So I’m a little boy again?”

Sigh.

But ever since he’s been doing it the right way. He just suddenly shouts, “I gotta poop!”

We help him with his shorts, and then he runs off to the potty. Hurray!!!

The big boys: Improved their wardrobe by 100% by letting them watch The Sandlot. They started their own league, at the elementary school baseball field, called The Sandlot League.

Things are sounding pretty awesome, don’t you think?

It reminds me of that saying that you hear at church:

“God is good all the time. All the time, God is good!”

Alan and our friend, Tom, are taking the three oldest boys and Tom’s son to a minor league game today. JD and I are hopefully working on cleaning out drawers and cabinets in preparation for this move. I’ve already completed 4 closets, the buffet drawers, and the living room.

It feels SO GOOD to haul stuff off to Goodwill!!

One last story:

This is what my to do list looked like the other day:

-Morning Chores

-Check on Daniel.

-Shower/get ready

-Check on Daniel.

-Start sheets.

-Check on Daniel.

-Put away laundry. Move sheets to dryer.

-Check on Daniel.

-Well, you get the idea. He’s such a good kid, and I can take him anywhere, but left to himself, he is busy, creative, and mischievous. You never know what he might decide to do!

Sometimes I do wonder what he will try next.

Alan and I agreed that this would be the perfect weekend to begin JD’s potty training. Why? Well, it was because yesterday, while JD was playing quietly in his room, he took off a poopy diaper all by himself, and let’s just say the Lightning McQueen blanket may never be the same…

Of course, that was completely forgotten by this morning. I was standing at my sink putting on my face, when JD walked over to the toilet and said, “Potty. I go potty, Mom. I go potty.”

Oh, right. He did not forget. That’s usually what it takes for potty training dreaders like me to finally get it done.

So we did it. HE did it! I stripped down his bottom half. That’s right. He went naked bottoms all day long.

It was so easy. JD’s readiness made it a breeze.

We now have three successes in the pot and only one accident—Yeah, he peed on the Lego drawers.

This morning he went two hours without going, so I poured warm water over him, as he sat on his little potty. That did the trick. Then the other times, he just casually walked over to his potty and peed. Whoot!

Oh, and I use pull-ups for nap time, and wonder of wonders. When we opened the Pull-Up box, there was a full-sized stuff Mickey Mouse in the box! What a perfect surprise for his first day of potty training! He was so excited.

We didn’t even have to resort to candy bribery. Throwing a jump up and down party worked well for JD.

The third time he went, he stood back, pointed at his potty and said, “Ta-da!!”

hehehe

“Dirt? Beach?”

He calls his sand box the beach.

Right now JD and Daniel are actually inside. JD has 2 Sarge jeeps from the Cars movie, so Dan convinced him to let him hold one. JD is very serious about his car collection. His favorite is this random hot rod called Boost. We only know his name is Boost because it’s written on his license plate.

All day:

“Boost?”

“Beach? Boost? Dirt?”

“Where Dad?”

“Boost.”

“Where Dad?”

He’s so cute, we just can’t leave him alone, and he’s two so he still likes to cuddle with me.

I was all geared up for the process too, y’all. I took a deep breath, Alan bought underwear, and I announced our plan to the tiny man.

“Look JD! Underwear! You are a big boy. You can pee on the potty and wear underwear.”

His eyes filled with sudden panic. His jaw set in utter determination.

Hmmm. The family stubborn gene is also strong with this one.

“Nooooooooooo!”

Uh-oh.

This is not how I had this planned.

I forged on. He wore the underwear, not that he approved of it.

I took him to the potty.

“Noooooo!” He fled the potty as though it were a rattlesnake. I don’t get it. Three weeks ago he loved the potty.

Why do toddlers pull this kind of mess?

Sooooo…..I put the underwear in the drawers. I put the boys back in Luvs. I’m going to have to buy a stupid tiny potty. I didn’t want to. It’d be so much easier if he’d just use the big potty like the rest of us. That’s what Daniel did.

But let’s face it. JD and Daniel are about as alike as a dog and a cat, so my next step is to try the little potty.

Each baby continues to remind me: As a parent, we never have this thing figured out. Each baby is unique, and some babies are down right humbling.

Embrace the humbling. Pride cometh before a fall.

Update:

Getting a little potty did make a huge difference in JD’s willingness to participate in potty training. He used it right away. He even pooped on it the first weekend, which he followed by not pooping on it again for months. No, really months. Sometimes potty training is a long drawn-out process, and that is the truth.

I am not new at this. John David is my fourth boy, my fourth go-round. This is nothing new for me. I should not be intimidated by this at all.

Right?????

Wrong. There are some things in life that you dread more with experience. As a first-time mom, I had no idea the things that can happen during potty training. How could anyone know these things? I was just stumped as to where to even begin.

Now that I’ve had a few toddlers, I know so many of the best case scenarios and the worst case scenarios. I roll my eyes at the trendy theories. I do. I’m sorry. I can’t help it. I’m completely puzzled as to why they say that running a 4 month-old to the toilet every 30 minutes is easier than strapping a diaper on them. And no, I’m sorry, I do not do 24-hour naked toddlers in my house. I have carpet, and enough pee will end up where it shouldn’t as it is. Why tempt fate? Underwear works just as well. No one wants to walk around in wet pants.

This is one of the few things we usually do pretty well. The last two boys were completely potty trained by 2 1/2. (But with one of them it felt like he was ‘training’ for a year!)

So here’s my pep talk:

To myself, or to any of you sharing this phase of life with me, whether it’s your first kid or your 10th, or whatever. I’m not saying I’m an expert. This will be a job, but let’s face it. It HAS to be done.

1. Your son is READY. He keeps telling you he’s ready. He keeps asking to visit that potty. It is TIME. You can do this!

Side note to first-timers: Your kid may never ask to use the potty. This is something only my subsequent children did. Unless they see other small children using the potty, the thought may not occur to them until you push it.

2. It really does only take a couple of days of the hard-core training to get the BASICS down. Accidents will seem like they keep randomly happening for months, but the basics will be mastered in just a couple of days.

3. We have tons of fluids ready to pump into the toddler. This will make it easier.

4. Toddlers are easy to please. You can do rewards, but you can also just throw a happy, jumping up and down, whoo-hoo, Wow! You did it! party, and they will feel greatly rewarded.

5. I have the other boys to help me. They are more than willing to coach and demonstrate for little bro.

6. UNDERWEAR. Pull-ups are a no-no for week 1. Save those for long car trips and night-time. Yes, I have unashamedly asked a toddler, “Can’t you just pee in your pull-up?” on a long car trip before. I’m not going for some trophy here. They know what’s going on. Unfortunately, they usually say no.

7. Get ready to do some laundry. The underwear and pants keep a lot of pee off the floor, but lots of laundry will be required.

And here’s the ugly truth about some things that might happen.

1. Even the best potty-trained kid will randomly poop in their pants, two years AFTER you potty trained them. We all have troubles.

2. Poop playdoh. It could happen to you. Steam cleaners work wonders.

3. Poop crammed into helicopters. I don’t even remember which boy that was.

4. Emergency peeing in public.

5. Discovering your child naked in someone’s yard on a playdate, peeing. It will probably happen.

6. Peeing on the trampoline. Just one of them did that.

7. It may be mastered overnight, or it may not feel like they are truly, completely, accident free for a solid 6 months. Don’t let it bother you. If you start potty training early, that is totally normal.

Make sure you aren’t just potty training yourself. If you set a timer, and run that kid to the bathroom every fifteen minutes, he will only learn that Mom is a little neurotic. The first few days, you may need timers. Past that, you have to let it go. Let the fear of wet underwear work its magic. Let them fail. We learn from failing.

Don’t despair if your kid doesn’t “Potty train in 3 days” even after you use the trendiest method on the market. Kids have plenty of their own developmental stuff going on, and they deserve lots of grace when learning new things.

I just pump in the fluids, put a stool at every potty in the house, take away the diapers, tell the toddler what to do, escort them to the potty often, and go with it.

We can do this…..as soon as we run to Target because I actually forgot to buy toddler-sized underwear.

Let’s hope this is less eventful than potty-training Daniel.
As I wrote in a previous post, my goal for 2014 is to chill. I want to calm down, enjoy my children, and not get all worked up about a bunch of stuff that doesn’t even matter all that much!

I was doing pretty great on day one, but then January 2nd hit, and Alan went back to work.

I don’t think ‘calm’ or ‘happy’ would be the first adjectives my children would use to describe me Thursday and Friday.

Sigh. Maybe it would have been easier to just say 2014 Goal: Lose 5 pounds. ha!

Oh well, I’ll be chill tomorrow…..for today I have started reading a book I just HAVE to share with you!

The author is also a blogger at http://moneysavingmom.com/.

I’m only on chapter two, but already I feel inspired!

My favorite things so far about this book:

–She talks about the importance of budgeting your time the same way you would budget your money. You can bet 2 hours (at least) will be taken by things you do not expect, plan 8 hours for sleep, and the rest for the things that matter most to you. She points out that you can end up feeling like you’ve failed after a very productive day, just because you planned way too many activities for that one day.

–She provides charts in the back of the book to help you plan.

–She talks about the importance of de-cluttering your house.

–She reminds us of the importance of setting a big goal and then breaking it into smaller pieces.

I so look forward to reading the rest of this book!! Highly recommend! We’ve been living “debt-free” for four years now, but tightening our belts really needs to happen this year. Raising children is expensive!!

***

Update on the kids:

Joshua is playing basketball this year. Alan said that he and Xavier had a great game today. Joshua had made such a huge improvement from the last game that he got the “game ball” today! Yay, Joshua!!

We have learned so much about handling team sports, now that we’ve been doing this a few years!

Our new rule: No kid plays team sports before 1st grade.

With the first kid, it wasn’t really so bad because it was just ONE kid’s sports schedule to manage, but with as many as we have now…..If they are going to take up that much of the family’s time each week, the child needs to be able to actually understand what they are playing out there!!

Also, we burned our kids out on baseball before they had a chance to really get good, and we don’t want to make that mistake again! But then sports just weren’t really something our first two boys were into at a very young age. If they’d actually liked it, it might have been different!!

Caleb insists that he DOES still like soccer, and he’s already on me to register him for spring. I wonder if I can convince him to wait until next year, when the goalie position begins…..

John David is finally all better!

Dan has had great potty training success this week!

No one is sick here! Hurray!

*******

I have to share a great find! I’ve been on the hunt for a good work-out shirt, without having to order online. I hate Target’s because I don’t look so great in spandex these days….sooo I found a very simple 100% cotton Hanes, purple t-shirt at Wal-mart. For $3.88!!! Love it. Now it’s not the best for major sweating, as it is 100% cotton, but for a winter work-out, I really like it.

This was SO EXCITING, ya’ll. Now that JD can sit and play with toys, Daniel is beginning to view him as a buddy. : ) They played in Dan’s room together (as in close by, simultaneously playing) for 30 minutes today. Daniel was having a ball putting Lightning McQueen in and out of the Mac trucks while JD LOVED the shape sorter. He kept grabbing it, shaking it, and throwing it.

Dan has three months left of being TWO! I hear people say all the time that they never experienced the terrible twos.

 haaahahaha! I have!

But not like you might think. When I say that, it conjures up images of fit throwing– “my way only” kind of kids, and that’s NOT Dan at all. Daniel is super sweet, unbelievably helpful (I can’t unload the dishwasher without him), and he does not throw fits. He does yell no occasionally, and we’re working on that, but he’s never taken a stand against me in public or anything like that. (thank goodness) He really is a pleasure to take in public because he’s so cute and obedient, quite the faithful sidekick!

Last week Alan took him to the grocery store, and when they came out of the store, a firetruck was driving past them, in the parking lot. The driver spotted Dan, put on the brakes, and reversed. Then the firefighters jumped out and showered him with attention and gave him a plastic fireman hat!

It’s just that Dan has been a potty training nightmare, and he has managed to break and lose a few things. He goes full throttle all day long.

A couple in our Sunday school class said that they potty train their kids in a day. One day and done. I almost choked on my water when they said that.

Daniel was the one who insisted on potty training. He wasn’t even quite two yet when he decided he wanted to do his business on the potty. For some reason, he just feels no qualms about back-tracking and pooping in his pants whenever he feels like it’s his best option.

This makes me sad, but sometimes he does it because I’m so busy breast-feeding JD, that he knows I can’t help him in time. There’s no way to combat that.

No kid gets that waited-on-hand-and-foot experience that the first born gets!

Yeah, so he’s been trained for a while now for number one, but you know what, while this would have gotten to me with previous kids, I’m really not that worried about it.

But I do get grossed out sometimes.

Okay. Enough about poop.

I have mixed feelings about this, but Dan does not need a nap every day anymore! Yikes! Yesterday I was happily skipping the nap so we could put him to bed early, but he fell asleep on the rug in the basement. Oh well. Then we had the forever long bed time. BUT today he managed to skip nap with no side effects, and it WORKED. He was asleep in a flash tonight.

…..Meanwhile, Caleb, age 6, also seems to finally be able to skip his nap!

🙂 God made ALL kids different. Gotta love it.

Dan is doing great. He talks our ears off. He is so lucky to be #3. Joshua and Caleb actually include him in their play. They ADORE Daniel. Today Joshua was not here, but Drake was over here playing with Caleb. They were playing a variation of chase/hide and go seek with Daniel. Daniel barged into the kitchen and asked me, “Can I bite brothers?”

Don’t worry; I told him no. : ) He asked me about 10 more times, then he went roaring down to the basement to “get” Drake and Caleb.

There are all different kinds of genius that a person can have. I don’t know which type this falls under, but Daniel’s talent is that he can quickly and effectively disable any child-proof device faster than most moms can. That’s right. Nothing is safe.

He’s still the neatest kid we’ve ever had. He cleans up after himself. We’ve never had a kid that did that. I was at a friend’s house, and he colored. When he finished coloring, he just went ahead and put all the crayons back in the box, closed the box, and closed the books and stacked them up.

Obviously, he doesn’t always do this, but this is huge for us! Oh! And he caps his markers after he uses them!! It’s like Mommy Heaven.

Daniel is so excited that JD can finally play with him, and I am so glad that we followed through with our plan of having a fourth baby so Dan would not be growing up alone while Joshua and Caleb have each other.

…..But man am I tired!

The boys have been out of school two weeks, and I’m feeling pretty beat down. There’s never a lull for me to sit down and think. How do people homeschool?? I NEED down time. I NEED time when I don’t have to speak to anyone or smile.

If you need me tomorrow, you may find me hiding between the bed and the wall. If they walk in my room, they can’t see the other side of the bed. I haven’t tried it yet, but I think it might work. I mean, no one can be surrounded by other people ALL the time, right???

This past week was a seriously crazy one.

 Monday:

We drove into the city for Daniel’s “My ears hurt” doc appointment. It turned out his ears were totally fine. If only I knew how to check for ear infections! I could spare myself so many doc appointments!

Then we came home, picked up Joshua from half day school, and stayed home until Monday night Yoga class.

I squeezed in laundry and household chores where I could.

Tuesday:

I took the big boys to school, came home and got Dan ready, and took Dan to his school. I was late, as always.

I had promised Joshua to take cupcakes to his class at his lunch, in honor of his birthday. I ran around town buying just the right cupcakes and such for Joshua’s birthday.

Of course, that conflicted with Dan’s pick-up time, so my friend Stacie helped me out with that. I decided to meet Stacie at the playground after school and hang out with the preschool moms. By the time I got home, it was time to turn it around and go get my big boys.

Once I got the big boys home, it was time for Joshua’s parent/teacher conference.

Cara came over and babysat the oldest three during the conference. We got out and drove her home, but I had our pizza for dinner delivered.

Wednesday:

First off, I had John David’s 4 month well baby appointment. Have you ever had one of those days where you actually amaze yourself?? I’m not trying to brag, but pulling this off felt like a serious accomplishment. I had prayed that morning, and let me tell you, I know God was there.

The drive to the doc’s office usually takes 25 minutes, but that day it took 40, so there had been some stress before we even arrived.

After waiting about 20 minutes, with Dan coloring nicely and JD sitting on my lap, a lady came over and said they were running behind, but we were second in line.

….About an hour, a bathroom trip, three books, countless coloring pages, and a few new acquaintances later, John David started to get very restless, and I began to realize I could not put him off on his feeding much longer!

He still refuses a bottle.

He finally started crying. I so did not want to have to feed my baby in front of my new acquaintances!

By this point, Dan way lying under my chair, driving little cars. Yes, I know there are germs, but there is a limit, people!!! I fished out my nursing cover and started feeding the baby…..and of course…..”John! John!” They finally called us back.

You should have seen us, gathering all the toys I’d brought, putting everything back in the stroller, and walking through the waiting room……still feeding the baby. That was a new experience for me. Not a man there dared to look me in the eye…..Ha! (Yes, I was still covered.)

That was when I had the moment! That tired but victorious feeling! This is absolutely crazy, but by golly, I am doing it anyway. 6 years ago, I might have been on the verge of tears in such a situation, but I felt perfectly calm. I actually amazed myself!

Roll Tide. No really, Praise God!

Thursday:

I finally got to breathe a little, wear jogging pants all morning, and start trying to put a dent in the piles of laundry. I didn’t even bother with Dan’s preschool. Then I remembered that it was the last day to pick up his school pictures, and I had been careful to pick out just the right outfit for them, so I did load up the little boys and go get those.

It was worth it! Just wait until you see these! Wow!

Beautiful child!!!

So back to Thursday….

I was supposed to have Caleb’s conference, but my girls canceled, so I rescheduled that.

Then of course……Halloween! Trick-or-Treat night! I was sweating it out because Alan works pretty late, and I knew the kids wanted to go early with their friends, but Alan kindly cut his evening short and took the boys out for me.

The boys got to go with a whole big group of their friends.

Halloween 2013

our boys + Andrew. Then they joined a football player, a Scream girl, and a Skylander to do a little trick-or-treating in the rain.

Dan insisted on using this Happy Birthday gift bag for his treat sack. Then he went to the pantry and filled it with applesauces and a spoon.

Friday:

Nonna and Aunt Janet arrived. Ya’ll should see how tidy my house is right now. It never looks like this. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Grandparents are a gift from God. And we love our Aunt Janet too!

Janet taught Dan a few new ipad games. He’s getting really good at Memory.

Dan and Nonna have managed to get JD to take a little bit of a bottle.

Dan loves this letter/card activity he got from my friend Amy.

So things have been going super well……other than a certain poop Playdoh incident that Nonna got stuck cleaning up yesterday. ...Yeah, Dan pooped on his sports rug and then played in it like Play doh. It was the most disturbing thing I’ve ever smelled…….

We wish you a fun-filled week. May the sun shine upon you, and may you never ever confuse poop with Play-doh…
