Over the years I’ve had a few run-ins with jellyfish.

This year was one of those years that we got stung. If you spend enough time at the shore, any shore, you are going to see wildlife. But what kind of jellyfish live in the Gulf of Mexico, exactly?

Thankfully, I’ve never had any ER trip inducing stings or run ins with sharks, though I did see a shark at Miramar beach once! That’s the upside to crystal clear water. It does make it easier to spot the dangers. In the dark Pacific waters of Monterey Bay, you didn’t have a chance! (For more information about vacationing at Miramar Beach, see this post.)

I didn’t get a single jellyfish sting this year. Hurray!

But Alan and two of our sons were swimming around when they all began to realize that their legs were stinging, all of them! It wasn’t a terrible run for cover ordeal, just a, “Hey, I’m getting out. My legs are burning.”

“Yeah mine too.”

“Me too.”

Now that has happened to me before, and the stinging sensation lasted for a little while after I got out of the water. It was like something tiny and invisible had been nipping away at me until finally it felt like I had little fire electric stings all over my body. I’m not even sure if I felt mine until I’d gotten out of the water.

What kind of jellyfish do you think that is??? Or is it something else?

That’s been bothering me for a while, the ignorance of it all. I decided to do some sleuthing around ye olde internet and see if I could find some answers to what has been stinging us.

Most likely culprit: Sea Lice

According to my research, “sea lice” can become trapped between your swimsuit and skin, which would explain why the boys all had it in the same area, where their swimming trunks were.

The good news is these are not lice like you think of, in your hair. They are actually teeny tiny jellyfish larva. It’s funny how you have instincts about things. I’ve always called them “tiny invisible baby jellyfish”, and it turns out I was exactly right.

The articles I read all say it can cause a “sea bather’s eruption” (rash) that can last for weeks. Well, I’m here to tell you that none of us had bumps for weeks. Maybe we all got out quickly enough to really only get a couple of stings. Maybe we aren’t all that sensitive or allergic to them. I don’t know, but this problem didn’t last long for us.

Are they all over the coast of Florida? Oh yes they are. They’re usually baby thimble jellyfish, according to several sources like this one and this one, even though you don’t see adult thimble jellyfish, the babies are still there.

So really, don’t sweat it.

Here’s what to do if it happens to you.

Get your swim suit off and get it in the dryer to kill off all those larva, pronto. Next, move on with life, and maybe no more ocean swimming until the next day, to avoid getting more stings.

Now onto my next jellyfish question. Have you seen these washed up on the beach?

What are those condem-looking jellyfish you see washed up on the shore some years?

Those are Portuguese man-of-war. They reportedly hurt BADLY and will leave some serious marks. As soon as these are reported, Florida beaches fly the purple “dangerous marine life present flag.”

The Last Question: About My First Jellyfish Sting

What about that time when I was around 14, and I got stung all over my legs, leaving little red welts all over my calves and shins, but it stung for the next 24 hours. It was miserable!!! What was that? That was more than just sea lice. I felt those tentacles hit me! Yet, it was not as drastic as the Portuguese man of war photos either.

I took everything I could remember about that incident and did more research.

It happened somewhere around Gulf Shores, Alabama. The seaweed was insane that day. It was so thick you couldn’t see through the water well. I was only in knee deep, and I was wading with my brother and my cousin.

The year before was clear and beautiful, and we had the time of our lives.

We were all getting hit by the seaweed, but then all of a sudden I felt it. Whatever it was! It WHACKED me with what can only be described as THE FORCE. I SCREAMED, and I leaped out of that water as quickly as my legs could carry me. I stayed on the sand and didn’t go back in for the rest of the day.

My grandparents, who had planned for us to spend the whole day there, were quite unhappy with my dramatic display because no one else wanted to go back in the water after hearing my screams and seeing all my little red welts. In fact, my grandparents told me I was overreacting and that it was just seaweed hitting my legs.

My parents, who are waaaaay more sympathetic people, were not there to help. I hobbled around the rest of the day, burning from the stings, and bewildered that I had this horrifying (to young me at the time) injury and no one cared.

And yes, I was fine, but it did hurt! I’m pretty sure I had those red bumps for the rest of the week.

But what kind of jellyfish was that??

It was something more than sea lice because I felt the long tentacles zap my legs– both legs, I think. This was over 20 years ago, so the memory isn’t crystal clear. Yet, it wasn’t the kind of dangerous jellyfish sting that requires an ER visit either.

I will never know exactly what kind that was. My best guess is a hydroid, or several hydroids.

The reason I think that’s what it was is three- fold, and I will explain what the heck hydroids are.

That day there was a seaweed invasion. Hydroids are a ton of tiny jellyfish attached to a feather-like sea-weed base. You can see it and think you are just looking at seaweed.

The stings were not so serious that I had to go to the ER, as they might have been had I been stung by a larger, more dangerous kind of jellyfish.

I found another blogger with a similar story to mine, but she was stung by a great deal less of it than I was, but her research led her to believe it was hydroids too. You can check out her blog here.

No, but after a little simple internet research and a few Google docs, I feel so much more informed. That’s a good thing since the beach is a place we frequent each year. We love the beach. Nothing can keep me away. I am one of those people who cannot go to the beach without leaving soaked from head to toe.

I had never actually seen this done before. The sun was shining, so conditions were perfect. Alan hunted down a magnifying glass and grabbed a dry leaf from the yard.

Now this is where it gets complicated:

Oh wait,no, it doesn’t. Literally, all we did was let the sun shine through the magnifying glass onto the leaf, and smoke appeared rather quickly.

Well, folks, that’s all there is to it. This may be my shortest blog post of all time, eh?

You don’t have to be a home school family to do fun science projects at home. These are the kinds of activities your kids won’t soon forget.

Want to know the science behind all this? I googled it for ya. I must confess that I did not find the science behind it interesting at all, but this site did the best job of holding my attention: thenakedscientist.com. Just click on that link there.

Okay, I guess I should go back to being an involved parent or tidying up or something. Hope you are all having a great week!

********

If you felt like you were reading the blog of a pitiful, dying woman in January and February, then I have good news for you!

I’m feeling better!

Going gluten free was my first step towards wellness. Now I’m also doing this Purification 21 day cleanse, which I’ll tell you more about soon, and I’m feeling even better. I haven’t lost a single pound, though. Ah, well. Go figure.

Plenty of happy things have been happening lately in school and sports and life in general, and of course you know I’m here to share all that.

First, let’s talk about home school.

There is a time of day that is my absolute favorite. It’s the hour at the end of the day when I read to the big boys. The children love it too because it means spending time with Mom. Do you think Joshua and Caleb would ever, in a million billion years, have chosen to read the entire Little House on the Prairie series?

This is a series of books that takes the time to describe the common things that little girls did every day in the late 1800s. There are chapters in which Laura describes their dresses, the color of their hair, and how to make maple sugar.

No, never, ever would my boys have chosen these books.

But you know what? We LOVED them. They groaned a little through the first one, but once the Ingalls started having run-ins with bears or wolves, I had them hooked. We are now almost finished with The Little Town on the Prairie, which means there’s only one book left, and we are Sadness.

I cannot tell you how much the boys have learned from listening to this series. We have learned how they built the railroad, how they plowed fields, and how children were (and still should be) expected to behave. We’ve learned about blizzards that lasted for days, grasshoppers that destroyed people’s livelihoods, prairie chickens, and literary societies! We’ve learned from Almanzo a better work ethic and from Laura that sometimes it is so very hard to be good, but it’s worth it to help others.

Their vocabularies have expanded. They understand the western expansion period of American history in a way that you can only get from a first-person account.

Oh! And the morals! You know I adore the high moral value of these books.

The boys’ favorite part, though, is always the wolves or bears. Anytime wolves or bears show up, we are tickled pink. They also despise Nellie Olsen and delight in seeing Laura get the upper hand.

The Little House books have been my favorite part of home schooling, by far.

You can see why I so badly want to try a cross-country road trip, and squeeze in a visit to a Little House museum.

Here are a few other books that are also fantastic, most of which the boys actually did pick out.

To say that Caleb likes this book would be a gross understatement. Caleb LOVES this book, mostly because there are two pages about Megalodon, an enormous extinct shark that he’s sort of obsessed with. Like seriously. Lately most of his artwork is shark art.

The boys would much rather focus on science reading than history, especially Joshua. He is supposed to be “Writing through Ancient History” with his writing class, but writing lessons have improved 100% for us, since I started letting him write on science or sports topics rather than history.

This is Joshua’s current favorite. It’s highly educational, but even the photos on the cover are so gross that Caleb makes him place the book facedown on the table. Of course, grossing us out is what makes it fun, so Joshua keeps taking this book to Classical Conversations and using different sections from it for his presentations.

This one both Joshua and Caleb like. I have also learned a lot from it. Who am I kidding? I’m always learning just as much as they are!

This next book has been my greatest purchase of the year, for Caleb:

I have no idea what brought it on, but Caleb suddenly decided that he wants to keep a diary, and he wanted it to be like Greg Heffley’s. Oh my goodness, I’ve never ordered something so quickly. See, what you don’t realize is that I’m actually just as “thrifty” as Alan. Alan saves money by working sales. I save money by trying to never buy things. (I can just see my mom reading this with scrunched eyebrows. Okay. Yes, this does not apply to clothes. No one can ever purchase too much clothing.)

Caleb has been diligently writing and illustrating in his new journal. He even has it divided up into chapters. It is serious business, and all of this with no begging, like I usually have to do to get him to write! So I’m beyond excited. (Did he already have a perfectly good spiral notebook to write in? Yes, he has several, but whatever inspires him, I guess!)

We also still read Elephant and Piggy. For kids ages preschool-2nd grade, I’m telling you, you can’t go wrong with Mo Willems.

These are also helpful for young readers. They are called Pathway Readers:

Whether you are a homeschool family or not, give these history stories a try!! They are in chronological order, and I promise you will learn just as much as your children. The stories are all short and interesting and packed with little-known historical facts. I read them out loud, but the big kids could read them too. We also have them on audio book. Joshua hates the audio book version, but Caleb actually asks to listen to them in the car!

There are even worksheets you can buy to go along with it, but I confess that we never get around to the worksheets or the color sheets. I figure they’re getting enough with the stories and the copious amount of map drawing and labeling that we do in CC.

I could talk books all day long, but the Dan Man is here asking me for milk.

What are your kids’ favorite books??

I feel like I will have an extremely firm grasp on my science plan by the time I finish poring over all these books! One interesting thing about the classical approach to education is that we pull the focus AWAY from good ol’ textbooks and look to real life experience and “living” books instead. (By living books, I just mean books that are not sold as textbooks.) However, I do actually have several ‘textbooks’ that we will reference this school [...]

I feel like I will have an extremely firm grasp on my science plan by the time I finish poring over all these books!

One interesting thing about the classical approach to education is that we pull the focus AWAY from good ol’ textbooks and look to real life experience and “living” books instead. (By living books, I just mean books that are not sold as textbooks.)

However, I do actually have several ‘textbooks’ that we will reference this school year.

What I have in my planner for science this year is WAY more exciting than just textbooks. This is going to be a fabulously fun science year for us. I am stoked. Here’s a little preview of what I have in mind….

Field Trips

Last year we got to go to the aquarium, the redwood forest, the beach, Point Lobos, the Pinnacles, the San Diego Zoo, and a whale tour. THAT will be hard to top, eh?

Last year we covered land forms, aquatic animals, and all the major systems of the human body (and traced our bodies and painted, labeled, and assembled all the major organs). We also memorized the first 16 elements of the Periodic Table, the scientific method, learned about evolution, and learned the definition and parts of an atom (even to include leptons and quarks!). We built our own little atom, and we did 24 science experiments in the classroom. We also observed sea mammals in their natural habitat, observed kelp forests, and we learned about gradual and sudden geological changes. We even discussed creationism versus the Theory of Evolution.

You know, it’s true that things change gradually over time. It’s completely bonkers to think that the intricate people, animals, and plants that we have in this world magically appeared with no creator. Bonkers! (But don’t worry. My children will be fully versed on both.)

This year is all about biology and earth science!

So here’s what I have for this year.. Most of these are in San Francisco

1. The Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park (Okay, this ties in more with our history unit on ancient Japan.)

2. Bison Paddock

3. the San Francisco Botanical Garden

4. California Academy of Sciences (natural history museum, planetarium, and aquarium)

5. Conservatory of Flowers

6. Point Lobos

7. Yosemite National Park

8. The Tech Museum of Innovation in Silicon Valley

Yeah….I’m a little bit excited!

9. Sacramento, because it’s our state capital, and we’ve never been there.

10 Science Camp at Mount Hermon– We are already registered!

11. Backyard bucket garden. We’ve already started potatoes. We have too many gophers to put the plants in the ground!

This just gives Dan something to do while the big boys are drawing and labeling things in their science notebook.

Of course, Dan can also draw things. Labeling will come much later. Dan’s 4.

Here are a few books I’m looking forward to using for science this year:

I no longer have to unload the dishwasher in the mornings or kick-start the laundry by myself. By the end of this year, I’m hoping to be done putting all of the boys’ laundry away as well.

Home schooling may be one of the greatest challenges I have taken on as a parent.

One of my biggest struggles is making learning fun. If the boys spend all day doing seat work, writing, and listening to me teach them, they start to become unmanageable. A house of unmanageable children will wreck your day in a hurry. I figure if it is hard for me to find ways to make it fun, it must be hard for other parents too.

Of course, I occasionally run into those parents who seem to have it all together. They LOVE home schooling, and their children seem to know everything. Then I think, “Oh, huh, look at that. Actually home schooling is quite easy for some.”

It’s amazing the difference that experience, preparedness, organization, and a toolbox of good ideas can make!

We’re growing in this. S-l-o-w-l-y but surely I’m figuring out how to manage home schooling.

I have one ace up my sleeve that is a big help. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law are fully experienced teachers. Nonna taught in the public schools, mostly middle school, for twenty years. Amy also taught middle school for over ten years. They have both sent me great supplies this year, and I have used as much of it as I could work in and saved the rest for later.

When Nonna was here this last time, she helped me set up a FANTASTIC filing system. I’ll talk more about that on a future post.

Then she introduced us to……..Brain Pop, Jr.

This can be used whether you are home schooling or not. I just joined as a parent. First, I want to tell you upfront that this is not a free site, nor are they paying me to talk about them. Man, I wish they were! This site offers:

Screen-shot of the home page

-A huge selection of cute and funny teaching videos, divided by topics and subtopics in math, science, reading and writing, health, social studies, and arts and technology.

-Each sub topic offers a game, printable activity, hard quiz, easy quiz, and more!

-For science, the print-outs are often easy-to-do and fun science experiments!! I am loving this!

I have tech-savvy kids who are hard to impress, and they actually enjoy these videos and activities.

It is the very first educational “computer center” that I’ve found this year that my second and third graders enjoy!

Brain Pop does have a few free videos and games, and you can download all of that on their app as well. This site is computer friendly as well as app friendly. They have a new “free movie” every week.

I warn you. The theme song is so catchy. It WILL get stuck in your head.

If you’d like a free preview of what Brain Pop Jr. videos are like, see this free one on local and state governments on their YouTube channel.

There is currently a two week free trial you can start out with.

I chose the parent option. It was $119.00 for the year. If you want to also get Brain Pop (grades 3-8th), you can get both for a total of $159/year.

Oh! And you want to be careful which Brain Pop version you get.

We use Brain Pop Jr. because it’s for Kindergarten through 3rd grade. The only thing they were missing that I’ve needed so far was Evolution and Natural Selection information, to go with our current science unit in Classical Conversations.

Regular Brain Pop has the same hilarious robot videos, but on the more advanced material. Nonna said that her middle schoolers loved it.

(Side note on the evolution bit: Yes, I teach them about both evolution and creation. Obviously, I’m a firm believer that the Earth was created by God. The boys are too. )

Using Brain Pop Jr. with Classical Conversations

So far, we have barely scraped the surface of what all you can do with this technology. You can bet I will be sharing more details on this in the future. For now, I’ll share what we have done so far, and my Brain Pop Jr. CC Cycle 3 Science Lesson plans for weeks 21-24.

-Composers and Musical Instruments! Brain Pop Jr. made learning woodwinds vs. brass, etc. a lot more fun!

https://jr.brainpop.com/artsandtechnology/music/percussioninstruments/preview.weml

This will take you to the whole music section: Music

There are so many options there!

I also used Brain Pop Jr. to help my third grader with division.

I used it to help my first grader with Reading and Spelling Skills.

But more than anything, we are using it for Science:

CC, Cycle 3, Week 21:

Uniformitarianism.

Brain Pop, Jr. didn’t define uniformitarianism, but it did have a whole video, game, quiz, and activity section on gradual land change and fast land change.

There is an erosion experiment to download, as well as fossil activities, and a Grand Canyon puzzle!

CC Cycle 3, Week 22

Catastrophism

Again, they didn’t use the word catastrophism, but they had all the bells and whistles for a fun lesson on “Fast Land Changes”, complete with science experiment and a sequence game.

CC Cycle 3, Week 23

Natural Selection– I couldn’t find it on Brain Pop Jr. either, but I guarantee you they would have it on the not-Junior version.

However, I did find a great video, somewhat related, on Extinct and Endangered Species.

CC Cycle 3, Week 24

Good Science

I found a great lesson on the Scientific Method.
