A God We Can Depend On

If you’re hoping for another funny story about flying with all our boys, you are sort of in luck. 😉 This photo is us waiting at baggage claim at 11:30 pm, filing claims for lost luggage–on New Year’s Eve. Happy New Year to us! Hang with me, this is a long one… Upon our arrival to the South, we realized we were missing a bag. We reported it, and 10 days later, that bag was still missing. That’s unusual. Airlines […]

A Week of Serious Breakthroughs

home school breakthroughs

When I started college in 1999, the computer world looked absolutely nothing as it looks today. We barely used email, let alone websites. Books were purchased at stores that sold coffee, notes were written on paper, and Facebook, WordPress, and Twitter were not even thoughts in anyone’s heads. On top of that, as an easily bored 18 year old, I swore off anything computer or business world related. I made my home in the school of Arts and Sciences. The […]

Help! There’s a One Year Old in the Classroom!

The morning hour was going extremely, unusually, unbelievably well today. No one was talking over anyone. No one was saying, “Mom! Mom! Mom!” No one hit anyone. There were no crayons in the floor. No one pooped in their pants. No one was sitting on top of the table. The room was almost silent. It was like the twilight zone. I told the boys, “Isn’t it nice in here? Wow. School would be so easy if it could always be […]

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Book, Movie, and Field Trip

I finally hit upon a CHAPTER book that the boys love enough to read, even without me. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I wish I had read it when I was a kid. It’s so good! Funny, yes, but also FULL of great life lessons. Joshua and Caleb give it all their thumbs up. I would love to say that I timed it on purpose to coincide with our CC group’s Chocolate Factory Tour field trip…..but no. It was just […]

We have officially made it through our very first QUARTER of home-schooling!!!  To me, this is the biggest deal since accomplishing the cross-country move. Oy. What a year! So here we go……12 things I want to remember from our FIRST quarter of 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and Preschool here at Pacific Christian Academy: 1. It’s really all about me. No, you read that right. It is almost always the case that how well THEIR day goes depends very much on […]

Classical Conversations: Trying to Figure out what the heck I’m doing

This week Alan was excited to get to go to Classical Conversations with us. He went to Joshua’s class, and I went to Caleb’s class. Last week I didn’t get to go to either class because it was my week to work in the nursery. I’m so excited that the child care workers will be back from vacation next week, so hopefully I will finally get to see what goes on during the morning assembly. I’ve had so many questions. […]

Centers for our Homeschool

We just completed our second week of Classical Conversations, and man oh man, is it a lot to memorize for some little ‘fellas. Now most people as “computer oriented” as myself would go to the CC website or to halfahundredacrewood.com and grab some ideas. I really don’t know why I haven’t gotten around to that yet. I’m a little embarrassed to admit, I’ve never even visited the CC Connected web page. How can this be?  I know. I know. I […]

New 1st/2nd Grade Reading Plan

I mentioned in my last home schooling post that my first grader is struggling a little with reading. I also mentioned that he started off really well, but now he’s crumbling. In fact, he pretends like he’s going to sleep when he is reading to me from his “reading book”. What changed? Well, the first week of school, you have the excitement factor going for you, so there’s that. However, I think it’s more than that here. Caleb doesn’t enjoy […]

Home schooling Progress

Ah……nothing like kicking back and resting with a three-year-old… So the first four weeks of home school are done. I’ve been trying to approach this as a puzzle. What can I do to fix the things that I see that need fixing in their education and in their character? Those are the two things I’m keeping them home to work on. I feel as though Joshua has made amazing progress. Seriously. Amazing. First, he started out way ahead of where […]

Embracing Life

Today I came down with some sort of sinus-y whoozy head problem. I kept feeling like I would faint, and the only cure was to lie down. I spent the afternoon, lying down, mad that I was lying down when I have so much to do. If dark clouds could really hang over your head when your glum, I would have had several. Then I read this blog post, from a blogger I’d never read before. Here’s the link: http://leftwithlouie.com/2014/09/08/what-oscar-said-rings-oh-so-true/ […]
