Daniel’s First Race: The Big Sur Marathon Kids’ 3K

You couldn’t find a more scenic route!

I thought it was so exciting to participate in such a huge event! People come from all around the world to run in the Big Sur Marathon. But did you know? There’s also a half marathon, a 5K, and a 3K, that are all a part of it.

Silly me. I volunteered to go at Daniel’s pace, so rest assured, there was no running for me.

Truly a pleasure to run with you, Dan.

So why am I still so gosh darn proud of the Dan Man? Well, most of the 4-year-olds there were riding in strollers for a while, walking a bit, riding in strollers, walking a bit, and so on. Not Dan. I only brought the single jogger, and the two-year-old lays a solid claim to that. Therefore, Dan ran and walked, and occasionally sat down in the middle of the road and said, “I can’t go on!” through the whole thing.

But he did! He did go on. He even beat one other 4-year-old. That’s right. It took us 45 minutes. Ha!

The big boys beat us by, I don’t know, a lot. See how well they warmed up:

We even brought along one of their friends, which drove the fun factor even higher.

See the Big Sur International Marathon signs behind us?

Oh, and there you have it, the new hair cut. Whoops! Didn’t really mean to chop off quite that much, but it is only hair, right?

Now, onto the next race….

  • Yup, hair grows back. But it's super cute!
And wow, gotta hand it to him. I like.. don't even know how much running is appropriate for kids. I love this. I love hearing that the four-year-olds DID rage against it, but also did it.

  • I love their warm-ups!! Makes me think I better step up my warm-up game ;) Good for Dan for finishing!! I feel like sitting down and saying "I can't do this!" when I do races so I totally understand his frustration! Love the hair :) I actually just had the same thing happen. I went in for a "trim" and came out with a hair cut. Oh well!

  • Great job, Daniel! All of you were great! Even JD participated by staying in the stroller! I like the haircut, April.

  • April, this is cool and amazing. And Daniel and the entire gang were awesome. Three years ago I would have had a solid claim on one of those strollers.....haha. There was no way I could have run a 3k. :)

With the ocean RIGHT there, boy that looks so beautiful and enticing. To experience the race atmosphere as young boys is really neat. You might just have a family of runners.

Greatly enjoyed reading this. I am so impressed, right down to the warm up.

    Thanks for sharing! :)

  • Yay, Daniel! Way to go! I love the picture of Joshua, overseeing all the other kids doing push-ups. Probably his idea, no? Such a natural born leader. Also, I think the haircut is cute.

Is it bad that my biggest motivator to participating in fun runs/races/and the like, is the free tee shirt? I like being able to be lazy and lounge around in a shirt that says, "I'm not always this lazy, just lounging around." It just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :) That's a cute one, too.

  • Way to go guys! I am impressed! I think even my 8 year old would complain and the 2 year old well, that would be impossible!

    • Haha! Yeah, my 2 year old too. I refused to let him out of his stroller. :)
